Plant-Based Nutrition for Optimal Health

Listen to “Plant-Based Nutrition for Optimal Health”.

Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.” – Hippocrates (460-370 B.C), the father of modern medicine.

People may be living longer due to advancements in medicine but, according to research, the latter two-thirds of their lives are often spent battling multiple chronic diseases. Fortunately, there may be a remedy.

Experts are increasingly pointing to plant-based diets to help prevent, and even potentially reverse chronic ailments, particularly in older adults.

Plant-based or plant-forward eating patterns focus on foods sourced primarily from plants. This includes not only fruits and vegetables, but also nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, legumes, and beans. It doesn’t mean that you need to go vegetarian or vegan and never eat meat or dairy. Rather, you are proportionately choosing more of your foods from plant sources.

There are a lot of potential benefits of eating a plant-based diet, such as:

  • Reduced inflammation
  • Lower risk of chronic disease
  • Better digestive health
  • Lower risk of weight gain over time
  • Decreased environmental damage
  • Reduced healthcare costs
  • Reduction in harm to animals
Eating to Boost Energy

Kick start a plant-based nutrition plan by focusing on eating only from these 7 food groups:

  1. Fresh vegetables, preferably seasonal and organic if possible.
  2. Fresh fruits, preferably seasonal and organic, however, make sure you eat more vegetables than fruit.
  3. Beans and legumes like black beans, chickpeas, and lentils
  4. Nuts and seeds
  5. Whole, unprocessed grains like brown rice, quinoa, and whole oats
  6. Healthy fats like avocado and grass-fed butter, and some minimally processed oils like extra virgin coconut oil.
  7. Meats, preferably organic and grass-fed (but just do your best), and fish 2-3 times a week.

Nutrition is one of the most powerful things you can change. What you eat can either be medicine or poison for your body. No pill or medical procedure exists today or will likely ever exist that can help people to improve their health as effectively as whole-foods, plant-based nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
